Understanding Company Culture
Now that you’re “in” meaning you have been matched with an internship experience based on your stated interests and career goals. It’s now time to gain awareness about the company’s culture.
Company Culture: Every workplace has a culture, and no two are ever alike. A company's culture often reflects the operating tastes, preferences, and style of the company's chief executive. He or she ultimately sets the tone and shapes the work environment. Quite simply, the corporate culture is the operating work environment that is set and shaped by the executive. *Derived from the Portland Community College Career and Employment Guide.

It's been said that the company culture is like the personality of the business.
As you start your internship it is expected that you have an awareness of the facets of company culture that you are experiencing such as the way people act, dress, present themselves, interact with one another, and conduct their work. Company culture includes they way the supervisor manages departments and employees. It includes the way customers are treated, the way departments interact, and the way that general business is done.
This is a process and it won’t always be clear-cut or comfortable. You will struggle and that is good.
The struggle will help you better understand the relationships and dynamics that exist within the company. The success of any relationship (personal, school, or business) requires both sides to build a sense of understanding, trust, and commitment with one another. Failure to take the time to get to know your business partner as you begin your internship experience could hinder your relationship with your mentor, the business, and the overall quality of the work that you contribute.
Business partners are looking for interns who express an interest in, enthusiasm for, and an understanding of the company. As an intern you will be expected to embrace the business’s mission and give wholeheartedly of yourself. Remember the “Entitlement Code?” In order to start your relationship off on the right foot and get the most out of your internship, it is imperative that you understand the business’s history, structure, mission, and function.
This assignment affords you the opportunity to create a Business Profile that will ultimately be reflected in one slide of your Final Presentation at the end of your internship. You will be required to show us the single slide you prepare and give a 3-5 minute verbal presentation about the company and the culture that exists.

Observing Company Culture
For this assignment you will need to answer ALL of the questions below to the best of your ability. Point totals are associated with each question. Make sure your answer is thorough.
Now, for the summative...
Once you respond to the above questions you have almost completed this unit. Remember you are to create one slide to present to the group. Your slide should trigger your ideas about company culture. Your presentation (the words that come out of your mouth) will be the evidence that you have done the work related to this topic. Use google slides. Title the project Final Presentation. Make only ONE slide. Take notes, add images, be prepared to speak to the slide so that we clearly understand company culture after your brief presentation. Please contact Mrs. Soeder with any questions along the way.
